প্রিয় শিক্ষার্থীবৃন্দ, আজ ইংরেজি ২য় পত্রের 4 নং প্রশ্ন অর্থাত্ speech change নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো। এই প্রশ্নে direct speech-এ একটি passage দেওয়া থাকবে। Passageটিকে তোমরা indirect speech-এ পরিবর্তন করবে। এর জন্য 4 নম্বর বরাদ্দ থাকবে। প্রথমে তোমরা নিজেরা চেষ্টা করবে। তারপর উত্তর মিলিয়ে নিবে।
Change the following passage into indirect speech: 4
Direct Speech: “Are you brothers?” asked the mistress of the house, turning to the dervishes. “No, by Allah,” they replied, “We are poor wanderers who met by mere chance.” Then, addressing one of the three she said, “Were you born blind in one eye?”
Indirect Speech: Turning to the dervishes the mistress of the house asked them if they were brothers. Swearing by Allah, they replied in the negative that they were poor wanderers who had met by mere chance. Then addressing one of the three she asked if he was born blind.
Direct Speech: “I have one word to say to you,” said the dealer, “Either make your purchase, or walk out of my shop.” “Thank you,” said the customer, “I am leaving your shop.”
Indirect Speech: The dealer told the customer that he had one word to say to him(C). He again told him either to make his purchase or to walk out of his shop. The customer thanked him and said that he was leaving his shop.
Direct Speech: “How dare you wake me up?” the lion roared, “I shall kill you for that.” “Please, let me go,” the mouse cried, “I did not mean to wake you up.”
Indirect Speech: The lion roared how the mouse dared wake him (l) up. He threatened that he (l) would kill him (m) for that. The mouse cried out in fear and requested the lion earnestly that he might be allowed to go. He added that he had not meant to wake him up.
Direct Speech: The teacher said to Nashid, “Why are you talking in the class? You should behave yourself.” “Sir, I am sorry. I am asking Rafin to lend me his pen. My pen has run out,” replied Nashid. The teacher said, “Be attentive and listen to my lecture.”
Indirect Speech: The teacher asked Nashid why he was talking in the class and said that he (N) should behave himself. Nashid replied respectfully that he was sorry. He added that he was asking Rafin to lend him (N) his (R) pen because his (N) pen had run out. The teacher advised him to be attentive and listen to his lecture.
Direct Speech: My friend said to me, “Why are you sitting alone here? I have been looking for you for one hour. Let us go for a walk in the open field.” “Leave me alone,” I said.
Indirect Speech: My friend asked me why I was sitting alone there. He added that he had been looking for me for one hour. He also proposed that we should go for a walk in the open field. I told him to leave me alone.
6. Direct Speech: “I came to Dhaka this morning. I sent you a telegram before starting from home”, he said. “Did you receive it in time?” he asked. “No,” I replied.
Indirect Speech: He said to me that he had come to Dhaka that morning. He added that he had sent me a telegram before starting from home. He also asked if I had received it in time. I replied in the negative that had not.
7. Direct Speech: The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I shall be much obliged if you kindly lend me the book you praised highly in the class room yesterday.” The teacher said, “I am very glad to know that you are eager to read this book. You are welcome to any of my books that you like.”
Indirect Speech: The boy said to the teacher respectfully that he would be much obliged if he (T) kindly lent him (B) the book that he (T) had praised highly in the class room the previous day. The teacher said to the boy that he was very glad to know that he was eager to read that book. The teacher added that he (B) was welcome to any of his books that he liked.
