মোহাম্মদ সারবিন মুন্সী প্রভাষক, ইংরেজি বিভাগ বীরশ্রেষ্ঠ নূরমোহাম্মদ পাবলিক কলেজ, ঢাকা Simple, Complex, Compound Phrase থেকে Clause তৈরির পদ্ধতি যেহেতু simple sentence-এর phrase-টিকে পরিবর্তন করে complex sentence-এর জন্য dependent clause (DC) বানাতে হয় এবং compound sentence-এর জন্য co-ordinate clause (CC) কিংবা independent clause (IC) বানাতে হয়, সেহেতু phrase থেকে clause তৈরির পদ্ধতি জানা অত্যন্ত্ম জরম্নরি। নিম্নে phrase থেকে clause তৈরির বিসত্মারিত বিবরণ দেয়া হলোঃ Conjunction তৈরির উপায়ঃ Phrase-এর মধ্যে preposition বা prepositional phrase থাকলে clause তৈরির সময় উক্ত preposition বা prepositional phrase-এর পরিবর্তে যথাযথ conjunction ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আবার ড়্গেত্রবিশেষে বাহির থেকে conjunction এনেও ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন- Phrase: Because of her illness ? Clause: Because ……… Phrase: for his having dishonesty ? Clause: as …….. Phrase: going to market ? Clause: who was going to market. OR, while he was going to market. বিঃ দ্রঃ Relative pronoun-গুলো (who, which, what, that, whose, whom ইত্যাদি) conjunction ও subject উভয়ের কাজই করতে পারে। Subject তৈরির উপায়ঃ Phrase-এর মধ্যে noun কিংবা possessive case (his, her, my, our, their ইত্যাদি) থাকলে clause তৈরির সময় উক্ত noun-টিকে subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হয় কিংবা possessive case-এর পরিবর্তে nominative case (he, she, I, we, they ইত্যাদি) বসিয়ে clause-এর subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আবার ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে বাহির থেকে pronoun (he, she, it, which, that, whom ইত্যাদি) এনেও subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন- Phrase: Because of her illness ? Clause: Because she was ill. Phrase: for his having dishonesty ? Clause: as he had dishonesty. Phrase: Due to the weather being cold ? Clause: Since the weather was cold. Phrase: written by Nazrul ? Clause: which was written by Nazrul. Verb তৈরির উপায়ঃ Phrase-এর মধ্যে gerund (verb+ing) কিংবা noun থাকলে clause তৈরির সময় উক্ত gerund-টির form পরিবর্তন করে verb হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হয় কিংবা noun-এর form পরিবর্তন করে verb হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে হয়। আবার gerund কিংবা noun থেকে verb বানানোর সুযোগ না থাকলে উক্ত বাক্যে প্রদত্ত independent clause-টির tense অনুসারে বাহির থেকে verb (সাধারণত be বা have verb) এনে ব্যবহার করতে হয়। যেমন- Phrase: Because of his having honesty ? Clause: As he has/had honesty. Phrase: Due to the weather being cold ? Clause: Since the weather was cold. Phrase: Despite his good behavior ? Clause: Though he behaves/behaved well.
