A person’s birthday is a special day. This is the date when the person was born. People around the world celebrate birthdays in different ways: In many countries, people celebrate with a cake. There are candles on the cake. There is one candle for each year of the person’s life. People sing a song for the person. At the end of the song, the person blows out the candles. In some countries, there is often a party for a child’s birthday. The child’s friends come to the home. There is special food, like sweets. The children play games and sing. The friends often bring a birthday gift for the child. The gifts are wrapped in colourful paper. The gift may be a toy, a book or some clothes. In some countries, the friends don’t bring gifts. The most important thing is to enjoy the day and spend time with friends and family.

Once upon a time there was an old farmer. He lived with his wife and three sons in a small village. The three sons always quarrelled with one another. One day, the sons were quarreling again and the old farmer heard them. In order to teach them the value of unity he called his sons beside him and told them to bring him three sticks and some rope. The three boys went and brought the sticks and rope for their father. The old farmer then tied the sticks together with the rope. Then he asked his sons to break the bundle of sticks. The three boys tried and tried but they could not break the bundle of sticks. Then their father untied the bundle of sticks and gave one stick to each of his sons. He told them to break the sticks. This time they all broke their sticks easily. Then the old farmer told his sons that nobody could do any harm to them if they remained united.

৫. জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির ফলে কেন পরিবেশ দূষিত হয়?
উত্তর:জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির ফলে বাড়তি জনসংখ্যার চাহিদা মেটানোর জন্য মানুষ পরিবেশের বিভিন্ন উপাদান ব্যবহার করছে। এতে পরিবেশের বিভিন্ন উপাদানের পরিবর্তন হচ্ছে। ফলে পরিবেশ দূষিত হচ্ছে। যেমন— মানুষ তার খাদ্যের চাহিদা পূরণের জন্য গাছপালা কেটে ফসল চাষ করছে। আবার আসবাবপত্র, কলকারখানা তৈরির জন্য গাছপালা কাটা হচ্ছে। এতে পরিবেশ দূষিত হচ্ছে। এছাড়া বাড়তি জনসংখ্যার খাদ্যের চাহিদা পূরণের জন্য জমিতে অতিরিক্ত সার ও কীটনাশক ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে। যা বৃষ্টির পানির সাথে মিশে পানি দূষিত করছে। বাড়তি জনসংখ্যার চাহিদা মেটাতে অতিরিক্ত যানবাহন ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে। ফলে এ থেকে নির্গত ধোঁয়া দিয়ে বায়ু দূষণ হচ্ছে। জনসংখ্যা যত বৃদ্ধি পাবে এসব কর্মকাণ্ড তত বেশি বৃদ্ধি পাবে, ফলে পরিবেশ আরও বেশি দূষিত হবে।
৬. মাটি ও পানি দূষণের সাদৃশ্য কোথায়?
উত্তর:মাটি ও পানি দূষণের সাদৃশ্য নিম্নরূপ—
মাটি ও পানি দুটিই পরিবেশের উপাদান। তাই উপাদান দুটি দূষিত হলে পরিবেশও দূষিত হয়।
দুটি দূষণের একটি বড় কারণ হলো জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি। প্রয়োজনীয় খাদ্য ও প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের জন্য মানুষ মাটি ও পানি উভয়ই দূষিত করে।
দুটি দূষণ মানুষের দৈনন্দিন কর্মকাণ্ডের ফলে হয়ে থাকে। রাসায়নিক সার, কীটনাশক, গৃহস্থালির বর্জ্য, রাসায়নিক বর্জ্য ইত্যাদি ক্ষতিকর পদার্থ মাটি ও পানি উভয় ধরনের দূষণ ঘটায়।
উভয় দূষণই মানুষের বিভিন্ন ধরনের রোগ সৃষ্টির জন্য দায়ী।
৭. পরিবেশ দূষণের কারণসমূহ লেখ।
উত্তর:পরিবেশ দূষণের অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ হলো শিল্পায়ন। শিল্প কারখানা সচল রাখতে বিভিন্ন ধরনের জীবাশ্ম জ্বালানি যেমন— তেল, প্রাকৃতিক গ্যাস, কয়লা ইত্যাদির ব্যবহার পরিবেশ দূষণের প্রধান উত্স। জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি পরিবেশ দূষণের আরও একটি বড় কারণ। প্রয়োজনীয় খাদ্য ও প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের জন্য মানুষ পরিবেশ ধ্বংস করছে। পরিবেশের বেশির ভাগ দূষণ মানুষের দৈনিক কর্মকাণ্ডের ফলেই হয়ে থাকে।
