Completing Sentence-এর নিয়মাবলী মোহাম্মদ সারবিন মুন্সী প্রভাষক, ইংরেজি বিভাগ বীরশ্রেষ্ঠ নূর মোহাম্মদ পাবলিক কলেজ, ঢাকা এইচ.এস.সি ইংরেজি দ্বিতীয় প দ্বিতীয় বর্ষের শিক্ষার্থী বন্ধুরা, এইচ.এস.সি. পরীক্ষায় ইংরেজি দ্বিতীয়পত্রে A+ পেতে Part A-এর Grammar আয়ত্ত করে উপযুক্ত অনুশীলন করার কোন বিকল্প নেই। আজ আমরা Completing Sentence নিয়ে আলোচনা করবো। Completing Sentence ইংরেজি ভাষার যে কোন প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই completing sentence-এর উপর কিছু প্রশ্ন দেওয়া হয়ে থাকে। অনেকেই সঠিক উত্তর দিতে পারেন না; কিংবা কিভাবে এবং কি ব্যবহার করে sentence-টি complete করা যায় তা বুঝে উঠতে পারেন না। তবে নিচের নিয়মগুলো আয়ত্তে এনে রীতিমতো চর্চা করলে অতি সহজেই sentence complete করার কৌশল অর্জিত হবে। তাছাড়া, এই নিয়মগুলো English grammar-এর অন্যান্য অংশের জন্য সমানভাবে প্রযোজ্য এবং শিক্ষার্থীদের English sentence ও structure সম্পর্কে সম্যক ধারণা দিতে সক্ষম। Unless / If not / Except if Rule 06: Unless / if not / except if শদ্বের অর্থ যদি না। যেহেতু এটি negative অর্থ প্রদান করে তাই unless / if not / except if দ্বারা যে clause-টি আরম্ভ হয় তাতে অতিরিক্ত no বা not বসে না। মনে রাখতে হবে যে, unless / if not / except if-এর পরের clause-টির আগে বা পরে সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ আরেকটি clause ব্যবহার করে sentence-টি complete করতে হয়। এর structure ও উদাহরণ নিচে দেওয়া হলোঃ a) Unless/Except if + sub1 + affirmative verb —— + ,+ sub2 + verb ——. b) Sub1 + verb ——- + unless/except if + sub2 + affirmative verb ———. c) Sub1 + verb ——- + if + sub2 + negative verb ———. Dependent Clause (DC):Unless you start at once, Independent Clause (IC): ..................... (you will miss the train). Q. Unless you start at once, ————. A. Unless you start at once, you will miss the train. Q. Please come here tomorrow unless ————. A. Please come here tomorrow unless I phone. Q. I’ll take the job unless ———-. A. I’ll take the job unless the pay is too low. Practise Yourself: Q. My wife will be upset if —————. Q. ——————-, my father will be angry. Q. I’ll be back tomorrow except if —————. Until এবং Till Rule 07: Till এবং until প্রায় একই অর্থে ব্যবহূত হয় বলে এদের যে কোনটিই ব্যবহার করা যায়। Until শব্দের অর্থ যে পর্যন্ত না (till not) এবং till শদ্বের অর্থ যে পর্যন্ত (up to)। মনে রাখতে হবে যে, until / till-এর পরে clause ব্যবহূত না হলে until / till দ্বারা একই অর্থ প্রকাশ পায়। তবে যেহেতু until দ্বারা negative বোধক অর্থ প্রকাশ পায় তাই until দ্বারা যে clause-টি শুরু হয় সে clause-এ no বা not বসে না। আবার till দ্বারা affirmative বোধক অর্থ প্রকাশ পায় বলে till দ্বারা যে clause-টি শুরুর হয় সে clause-টি negative দিয়ে করতে হয়। Until / till-এর structure ও উদাহরণ নিচে দেওয়া হলোঃ a) Until / till + affirmative clause b) Till + negative clause c) Till / until + word / phrase Independent Clause (IC) :Please wait here patiently Dependent Clause (DC):.....................
